Chris Mathews, CPA

Partner

“I prefer to organize my time in the mornings and evenings, so that I can be immediately available and responsive to my clients’ e-mail and phone contacts during the workday.”

With more than 34 years of experience in the field of accounting, Chris Mathews brings solid knowledge and leadership to working with professional services firms, construction contractors, the somewhat-exotic area of touring operators in Hawaii and California, and high net worth individuals. He maintains a strong focus on taxation of small to medium-sized businesses and high net worth individuals, and is more knowledgeable than most accountants about the Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA) and retirement structures in relationship to key employees.

He is well-versed in tax issues at the federal and state tiers, with clients across the country as well as Maryland, DC, and Virginia, giving his practice more of a national than a regional scope.

Chris’s approach to client work takes a slightly different twist because he calls himself “super-hands-on” — he often prefers phone calls to e-mail, so he can provide a full explanation of why a given retirement plan is better for a certain client than others. Or, why one tax decision is most beneficial and then determine the right milestones for his clients’ future discussions and decisions. This habit of staying in touch on a regular, personal basis communicates a sense of security and is a key factor in his commitment to retaining clients over the long term; he has worked with many clients for 15 or 20 years.

Chris loves to travel, hike, and camp in national parks with his family; any time he can enjoy family adventures, it’s a bonus. He plays golf and tennis, and is a fan of various sports.

Chris is passionate about creating opportunities for families, primarily grounded in education. He serves on the boards of three not-for-profits: one that builds schools, missions, and orphanages in South Africa; another that works with schools in the U.S.; and a local group that helps less-affluent families gain college opportunities for their children.
